Understood. In the event that this Zanpakutou attacks one of us, I'm assuming retreat is the proper course of action?

Yes. Hisagi-taichou himself is rather injured; thus it is unwise to try and fight his spirit. And Hisagi-taichou is stubbornly insisting to come here himself. You will need to meet him halfway, so keep your senses well attuned.
